American Window Film installed a 3M Prestige window film to a home in Los Altos Hills, California! This home has beautiful views of nature and to utilize the views as much as possible, there are large glass windows in every room of the house. As you can see from the photos below, the windows are floor to ceiling and go around the entire room. The homeowner loves the large windows because they are able to fully utilize their views and a ton of natural light is let into the home, making it bright and welcoming. With that being said, the homeowner was experiencing high amounts of heat and the home was always stuffy and uncomfortable to be in. To try and combat this issue, the homeowner turned to the air conditioning, which led to a high energy bill, especially in the warm summer months.
The homeowner has worked with American Window Film in the past and was really happy with the results. They were able to reduce heat without darkening the space. They were interested in getting a solar film installed that would help reduce heat and reduce their energy bill, without compromising their views. They decided to request a free quote and meet with one of our sales representative’s to find the best window film for their home!
American Window Film’s goals for this project were to help the homeowner find a solar film that has a high heat rejection and doesn’t compromise the beautiful views the home offers. Our sales representative from our San Francisco office met with the customer at the home to learn more about the project details, take measurements of the glass in question, and show the homeowner samples of the different solar film options they have!
When our sales representative met with the customer he learned that both of the kids rooms and the master bedroom were causing the biggest problems. The upstairs floor was extremely hot and uncomfortable to be in. The homeowner expressed that they were looking for a high heat rejection window film for these windows. The customer said that their main priority was to not darken the home or lose any of their outside views.

After seeing the problematic windows and learning more about what the customer was looking for, our sales representative was able to make some suggestions. Since the customer didn’t want to darken the home or compromise their views, our sales representative suggested Madico ceramic window tint, Huper Optik ceramic window tint, and the 3M Prestige window film line. The reason why he suggested these different window films is because they all offer high heat rejection and don’t contain any metal, which means their views won’t be compromised at all. From there, our sales representative went on to educate the customer about the different options they have in each of these lines and showed them samples of each so they could see which one they like best.
After talking with our sales representative, learning about the different options they have, and seeing the samples of the options, the customer decided to go with a 3M Prestige window film, specifically Prestige 50. This 3M Prestige window film blocks 56% of heat, 44% of glare, and 99.9% of UVA and UVB rays. Blocking 56% of heat provides substantial heat rejection and will make the upstairs of the home noticeably cooler. The homeowner won’t have to use the air conditioning as much, which means their home will be more energy efficient, which will provide energy savings.
This 3M Prestige window film has low reflectivity and contains and is non-metallized which means not only are the views going to stay intact, they are going to be enhanced! Blocking 44% of glare is going to get rid of the annoying afternoon sun glare which will make these rooms more comfortable to be in. Finally, the UVA and UVB rays we were just talking about are the leading cause of su fading. By blocking 99.9% of them, the lifespan of the homeowner’s furnishings, floors, and valuable belongings will be extended.
The customer decided that 3M Prestige window film was the perfect solution for their home and decided to have it installed to all of the glass in the kids rooms as well as the master bedroom. Since it has low reflectivity, the customer was able to only install it to the problematic windows without having to worry that the home was going to look un-uniform from the exterior. 3M prestige can be a long term solution, but it can also be removed with no damage to the glass if done by a professional team.
This installation ended up being 338 square feet of 3M Prestige window film and took a team of two installers 8 hours to complete. Overall, this installation was a success because we were able to help the homeowner find a window film that reduced heat without darkening the home or compromising the views outside! In addition to solar film and 3M Prestige window film, American Window Film also services decorative window film, custom graphics, anti-graffiti film, window security film, and exterior building wraps.
