The Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) announced nearly $50 million in school safety funding through its School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP).
An increased number of school gun violence incidents has led school districts throughout the country to improve their campus security measures. According to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, there were 191 school gun violence incidents in 2018, which comes to more incidents in one year than in the last four decades.
American Window Film works with 3M™ Authorized Window Film Dealers to assist school districts in installing 3M™ Safety & Security Film on their glass doors and windows for added protection. Our nation’s most valuable resource must be protected, and 3M Safety & Security Film can help.
How 3M Safety Film Works
This strong, state-of-the-art film protects both people and property. It is scientifically proven to hold together shattered glass after impact. By holding the glass together, the film prevents glass shards from flying and causing injuries.
The film becomes even stronger when it’s installed with a 3M Impact Protection Attachment System. The attachment system is designed to connect the film to the outer edge of the window, sealing the edge and firmly holding the film in place. American Window Film can supply you with both.
Across the nation, many school districts have installed 3M Safety & Security Film as an additional layer of protection on the glass doors and windows of their facilities.
Federal Commission on School Safety Recommends 3M Safety & Security Film
After the sharp increase of school gun violence in 2018, the United States assembled a Federal Commission on School Safety to recommend measures to further protect school campuses and decrease gun violence. The Federal Commission released a report in December 2018 that recommends, among many strategies, installing safety film to a school facility’s glass envelope.
Years prior, the Final Report of the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, released in 2015, recommended safety film as a measure to deter intruders. The advisory commission was formed after the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14, 2012.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission in Florida released a report in January 2019 that listed “ballistic resistant glass covering” as one of the recommendations to improve school safety. The commission was formed after a tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high School on February 14, 2018.
The recommendation is clear. Security window film, such as 3M Safety & Security Film, can improve safety on school campuses.
The Benefits of Installing 3M Film
There are many benefits to using the 3M Film. It can delay intruders’ entry, which allows up to two minutes of extra time for emergency responders to arrive and people to take shelter. Those extra two minutes are critical.
Installing a layer of 3M Safety and Security Film can also help with both sun control and to add privacy. It is also much less expensive than purchasing and installing new glass.
There are several options you can choose when it comes time to invest in 3M Safety & Security Film. The Prestige Ultra Series offers solar control options in addition to its safety features. The films provide up to 97 percent infrared rejection, which blocks heat transfer, improves overall comfort and provides energy cost savings. The film also blocks 99.9 percent of harmful UV rays, which helps reduce fading and increase the life of furniture and flooring.
3M’s privacy films also are available and can be combined with safety film. These films are designed to block views. 3M™ White Matte Translucent film obstructs the view but allows the light to still filter in. 3M™ Mirror Film provides high reflection for a mirror-like appearance and one-way view. School districts have installed these on classroom door windows, media library windows and office staff windows to protect faculty, staff and students. These privacy films are often the fraction of the cost of new glass.
Another product that is useful for schools is, 3M™ Anti-Graffiti Film, which provides surface protection in high traffic areas. The film works against most scratches, acid etching, gouges and tagging. Easily removable, these films cost less than damaged glass replacement. The films also provide 99 percent UV rejection to prevent fading.
How American Window Film Can Help
Schools throughout the country are receiving funds from a federal COPS School Violence Prevention Program. Funds from this federal competitive grant program are assisting school districts in launching evidence-based school safety programs, including the placement of deterrent measures such as security film.
Applications are closed for the federal program, but several states have similar grant programs for schools. To apply, school districts may need to have a safety risk assessment and pricing as part of their application. American Window Film can assist with this by putting schools in touch with the proper channels and updated information.
American Window Film has been operating since 1975 in the United States. The company has worked alongside 3M for more than 25 years. Additionally, American Window Film can put school district administrators in touch with 3M™ Authorized Window Film Dealers within the community served.
